Field Target scopes
Field Target shooting is one of the most precision-driven disciplines in airgun sports. Whether you're a seasoned competitor or a newcomer to the scene, one of the most critical components of your setup is the riflescope. Choosing the right scope for Field Target shooting—particularly for the common distance range of 10 to 55 yards—can be the difference between consistent hits and frustrating misses.
1. Exceptional Range finding Capability
Field Target shooting does not allow for the use of external rangefinders, so your scope must be able to accurately determine distances using parallax focus. A quality FT scope excels at range finding by allowing the shooter to fine-tune the focus and estimate distance based on image sharpness. Accuracy in this area is paramount—being even a couple of yards off can mean a missed shot.
2. Large Objective Lens
A scope with a large objective lens (typically 50mm or larger) gathers more light, which is especially useful when shooting in shaded woodland or overcast conditions. Better light-gathering helps improve image clarity and sharpness, both of which are critical for accurate range estimation and target identification.
3. High Magnification
Scopes in the 10-50x or even 10-60x range are highly favoured in Field Target. High magnification allows you to zoom in on fine details of the target or around the target such as a cob web, frayed string, veins on a leaf or wood grain, making it easier to assess the image’s sharpness and determine distance precisely. While higher magnification also amplifies movement and can reduce field of view, the ability to pinpoint a target’s exact range far outweighs the trade-offs for FT shooters.
4. Sidewheel Parallax Adjustment
A large sidewheel is more than a visual upgrade—it's a critical tool for range finding. When attached to the side parallax adjustment turret, the sidewheel allows shooters to mark distances with precision. By carefully calibrating the wheel, you can quickly and accurately determine target distance in competition settings, improving consistency across varying terrain and target placements. Some scope are sold with Sidewheels but a lot of shooters also choose to use after market ones supplied by the likes of Jon Harris, AJP Engineering Barry Taylor and Greenham Engineering. These engineers also make other parts for scopes such as large elevation turrets, Custom mounts etc.
5. Precise and Repeatable Turret Adjustments
Reliable elevation and windage turrets are non-negotiable. In a sport where the pellet drop and wind drift must be accounted for with surgical precision, your scope's turrets must track accurately and consistently. Click values should be fine enough (e.g., 1/8 MOA or 0.05 MRAD) to make small but crucial adjustments. Look for scopes with tactile and audible clicks that offer dependable adjustment repeatability over time. Large Elevation turrets with large numbers also aid when making adjustments as it is easier to see and to get a grip of.
6. Ample Internal Adjustment Range
Scopes used in Field Target must offer lots of internal adjustment—especially when shooting sub-12 ft-lb air rifles where pellet drop can be significant over the 10–55 yard distance range. A wider adjustment range allows you to dial in without needing external elevation mounts or adjustable scope rails.
7. Excellent Light Transmission
Even in well-lit environments, a scope with good light transmission improves contrast and clarity. In shaded woodland or during early morning competitions, this feature becomes even more valuable. High-quality glass, proper lens coatings, and smart design all contribute to superior light handling.
Final Thoughts
Not all scopes are created equal—especially in the world of Field Target shooting. The demands of accurately engaging targets between 10 and 55 yards require specialized optics that offer superior range finding, precision turret adjustments, and exceptional image quality. While investing in a high-end FT scope may seem costly, the rewards in performance and consistency are well worth it for serious competitors.
